We usually prefer the botanical species, but we couldn’t refuse the cultivar Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant’! The cultivar name is actually a little confusing as there is nothing ‘ruby’ or ‘giant’ about this Crocus. However, if you look more closely at the flower, then different tints of purple become apparent, and is what makes Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant’ so beautiful: the centre of the flower is a very pale purple – nearly white – while the tips of the petals are a deep purple.
Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant’ is not so different to the species Crocus tommasinianus in that she’ll naturalise just as easily and is therefore also suitable to plant en masse. Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant’ was introduced in 1956 by the bulb grower J. Roozen-Kramer (from Bennebroek in the Netherlands).
