Crocus vernus 'Vanguard' is a cultivar originating from Crocus vernus (Dutch crocus). Crocus vernus is somewhat larger than Crocus tommasinianus. Crocus vernus ‘Vanguard’ was selected by van Tubergen in 1934 from a Russian form of Crocus vernus. It self seeds less readily than Crocus tommasinianus, but does make good clumps that can be divided and replanted every few years.
Tip: Plant Crocus vernus 'Vanguard', Crocus vernus 'Jeanne d'Arc' and Crocus flavus (Yellow crocus) together. See the second photo for the result.
